Aquarian SK-1 has resonance and thump
I wanted a balance of "boom," resonant drum sound, and low end thump, and this one does it. It's between the dead thud of the SK-2, and the resonant very popular Remo PowerStroke 3. I want a cannon that thumps your chest, but I also want it to sound like a drum. If you just want a low end thump, any crap bass drum stuffed with pillows mic'ed up will do. Best Sounding Kick Head OUt There.
In the 45 years I've been playing drums I have tried all heads on my bass drums ranging from 24" down to 18". Super kick one when paired with anybody's ported or un-ported reso head without any additional muffling or pillows gets "That Sound". Clear, deep, Wrm yet percussive, with just enough sustained tone for recording or miked or un-miked live at any volume level. The reason the PS IIIs or Emads sound good on Youtubes' is the studio EQ-ing. But live they are boxy and flat and have that plastic thud. An Evans 56 or modern Aq. Modern Vintage II with the strip of felt on the Reso side is also an excellent choice to get the best 'record like' sound out of you bass drum. Best bass drum head ever!
Killer, killer bass drum head. I was looking to get more punch and focus out of my bass drum without stuffing a bunch of blankets inside. This head dramatically changed my bass drum and I pulled all my laundry out. My guitarist commented right away that the bass drum sounded mic'd up.
