Like the majority of long-time rock guitar players I've tried a pretty wide variety of dirt pedals looking for that magic temple on the mountain: wet, lively distortion with clarity, cut, compression and string separation without having either the low end or high end buried. It's a tall order as it stated. If you add to that the requirement to have all this at bedroom volume levels without destroying tone and the ability to "play well with others", from your past experience you might well think you're asking the impossible. Apparently, not so much. Enter the Wampler Ratsbane. Bearing in mind just about all dirt boxes share the same circuitry heritage, it then comes down to the tweaks. And nobody does tweaks better than Brian Wampler. The controls allow you to easily dial in all of the above regardless of your rig configuration. Clean amp, dirty amp, single coils, doubles - the Ratsbane doesn't care. Concerning other pedals in your chain, it will join the lineup with a generous attitude. I imagine that if it could talk it would tell the other guys on the team: "I'm here to help the team win. I want you all to be able to contribute but at crunch time I'm going to take the ball myself and score." And so it does. Bottom line: It is simply the unparalleled best distortion pedal I have ever used bar none. Read full review
