For anybody who enjoys movies about "life the way it was", this is definitely a movie to see, A TV movie about a close-knit family during the Great Depression of the 1930s overcoming the odds during the Christmas Holidays of 1933. The movie is actually based on an early life experience of the story's author Earl Hammer.

Wanted to have this in my library for sentimental reasons. All of the movies and shows from this time period are slowly disappearing. Glad you had this!

Remember the Walton's? Sometimes the brunt of jokes, but this is the beginning of the long running series and a wonderful story line that led to "The Waltons" tv show. Patricia Neal is excellent as the matriach, ever faithful to her family. She holds them together with the stern fierce loyalty that was required in the Depression. I miss the way AMERICAN used to be. People helped people. People had faith. People served their neighbors with pride and loved one another. There is plenty of humor is this film as well. The kooky Balwin Sisters were quite happy to share "the recipe" as John-Boy approached them to borrow a vehicle. This was a made for TV movie and I saw it as a child, never forgetting how great it was. I have since shared it with family and friends who have made it a special part of their Christmas Holiday family gatherings. It doesn't get nearly the attention it earned. Give your kids a treat anytime of the year...teach them there are ways to create triumph over seeming troubles...and help show our kids how REAL AMERICANS used to be! Perhaps that might be a start to taking our country back to the place where she was once loved and respected for her strength instead of all this PC junk we're forced to endure today. THOSE were the days of America in real hardship...and everyone came out just fine!Read full review
Early Walton's story. The cast included most of the TV series' Walton children, and it was interesting to see them in younger years.

Backstory for the hit tv show The Waltons from 'back in the day' (can I get a shout-out?!) A little bit, eh?, the storyline of this series' pilot seems a little disconnected. Soooo glad for Michael Learned, Ralph Waite, and, of course Grandpa when the show hit prime time! If you end up enjoying the series, or are already a fan, be sure to dig around online for fun/interesting trivia and Carol Burnett's absolutely hilarious 'The Walnuts' skit!!!!!!
