I found this filter to be well built. The setup instructions were very clear and easily understood. I am very pleased with it's designated function as an aquarium filter. In addition I have found the water change option through the filter to be a very efficient way to do my water changes.

⁹I had bought one of these years ago. I liked how easy to manage it and how gorgeous the tank was. The fish were energetic and beautiful. However this replacement fx4 doesn't met the expectations that I had of it. Plus there is some residual in it that is working its way out. I'm having to do twice the amount of water changes then before. The Discus and E.Demsy's are dealing with it but the Discus isn't as bullying as she used to be. In normal worlds, one would except this. But this Discus is extremely different from the norm. She is the biggest bully with the mature male electric demsy. They both have slowed way down. Plus there are bubbles that look more like chemical bubbles. Its not oily ether. That can only becoming from the filter. I did rinse this filter out for dust. The filter did come with internal filter media. The company has gotten cheaper. Its changed the whole structure. Made it smaller. Made objects to receive what looks like a handle. Plus instead of 2 hoses, for the water. It printed in smaller letters, one hose to be cut in two pieces. Which leaves you with a missing connector on each hose. I had to buy a second hose for around $35.00 instead of extra connectors. As I need one hose to use the whole length. These filters are made for bigger tanks. Like a 150g and up. Mine is a 250g. So to get to the other end one hose was important. Then the return hose also had to be longer for this filter to be on the floor. If I had it to do all over again, with all the extra things to have to buy, no I believe I would go a different way. It definitely isn't for even the average medium experience aqua person. You need years of experience in order to fix the problems and use it. I've got it running but am worried about why the water is looking more like watered down bubbles in a bath tub.... The last fish that I bought was over a year ago. The tank is so tall that I'm the only one that can get up there to feed. But I live alone. Except for 1 or2 small plastic plants, the rest are live plants. The lace plants were blooming.. instead of vibrant leaves they have a off color to them.. The snails are shut down, mainly the yellow rabbits. You can see them in the corner. Same water that I've had for over 6 years. So go figure.....Read full review

Does a great job at keeping my turtle tank clean, easy to use and put together. Prior to this order I had a purchased a filter off Amazon, but every week it would breakdown and need to be adjusted. The Fluval Fx4 filter was recommended to me, and I'm glad it was because it puts in work.

Like all other aquarium hobbyists, I need equipment that is reliable. After doing research on canister filters, the FX4 was one that was consistently recommended by users for its performance and dependability. I could have spent a third less and gotten something that most hobbyists find to be satisfactory, but I could not take the chance that a filter could fail - most particularly leak or stop working altogether - because my schedule takes me away from home frequently and I cannot expect the fishsitter to know what to do. So I not only have a piece of equipment that is dependable, it keeps my 46-gallon tank pristine and my African cichlids happy. Yes, the FX4 is rated up to 250 gallons, but there's nothing wrong with overfiltering, especially when it comes to the bioload that cichlids generate.Read full review

It filters the aquarium water as it should. I am surprised of how extremely quiet it is. This is the cleanest my aquarium has ever been.!
