  • A good book to add to your library of instrument building books

    As the title says, a Guide for the Amateur. Has a good flow of steps to making your first violin. For the most part there are good illustrations. One area I really liked better than any other Violin making book, are the alternate instructions for making ribs. Very good and eliminates many of the roadblocks for most makers who haven't bent wood before. One minor area that could have been better were the instructions for making the scroll on the neck. The author uses a similar technique to the one in the now out of print Harry S. Wake book. The illustrations in Wake's book are better, but between the two, the technique is very clear, and easier to follow and execute than others who suggest carving only with chisels and gouges.
