Having spent some of my Navy service in an A-6 squadron in the early 70's, I found the movie fairly realistic. They deviated from the book in some significant ways. I would encourage anyone to read the book and you will better understand some of the quotes. Fighter squadrons get the glory, attack squadrons do the hard work.

Good movie. I personally served onboard the uss independence and the movies (Top gun and flight of the intruder ) were better than real life. Onboard wasn’t as fun and exciting as the movies. Nostalgia was an eye opener.

Near the end of the Vietnam war, there was a growing sense of disillusionment being felt by many of the pilots flying missions nightly against seemingly worthless targets. With an obvious lack of progress being made, and with pilots still dying, there was an immense temptation to do something about it. Everybody knew where the rockets and bombs were, but these targets were "off limits". Can you just imagine the frustration of pilots being shot down while bombing worthless targets, when the prime targets are ignored for political purposes. This was the situation in Vietnam in the early seventies. Lt.Jake Grafton, "Cool Hand" understood this. His partner and weapons operator has just been killed. His C/O Cmdr. Frank Caparelli, receives Lt.Cmdr. Virgil Cole on board the carrier CV62. Cole has a lot of "baggage" and is on a short leash. Cole and Grafton fly an A6 Intruder. This is a light bomber, and can also be used for electronic penetration. When enemy forces launch SAM missiles or turn electronic tracking systems on you, you fire special radar seeking defences that take out the source. This process is to clear out missiles for the bombers to be able to safely bomb targets. Grafton tells Cole of his plan to take out People's Resistance Park in downtown Hanoi. This is where all of the SAMs are stored and it is a "untouchable" target because of the Paris peace talks. One night they decide to divert from their original target and after dropping only two of their eight bombs, flying over Hanoi and bombing the forbidden target. They pull it off, but are in real trouble. This was the level of conduct at the end of the war. This movie was fiction, but these sorts of things actually happened.Read full review
Great movie...Great price! I worked the flight deck on A6's as our squadron's AT troubleshooter during the Vietnam war. The characters are true to life, as is the technical background of the movie. Again, a great movie!
