This model CD recorder was apparently quite popular in its time. When it's functioning normally, it's great. However, I suspect there is something not right about how it was designed and constructed, leaving many to fail prematurely, with their owners unloading them on ebay and elsewhere. Of three that I have purchased, ALL of them had to visit the repair shop before I could use them normally - a win/lose situation.

I’ve owned the Phillips cd recorder/player for years and years. It has never caused me a bit of trouble, but now at last the Phillips company has failed us. They no longer produce the special cd disc meant to be used for these units. The only ones that will work were made in Japan with a slower recording speed. I haven’t been able to find any in over a year. The Units are really well made but they are no longer useful. Don’t buy them. They’re useless.

I purchased this cd recorder back in 1999, and it is still going strong! You can record from any audio source including making copies of store-bought cd's. I have transferred all of my old vinyl, cassettes, and even internet audio to cd's using this device. It is simple to use, and the ONLY drawback is that the cd-r's it requires are getting harder and harder to find. To work, they need to have the "Compact Disc Digital Audio Recordable" logo stamped on them. Sony and Maxell brand music cd-r's seem to work best (NOT MEMOREX). Great recorder otherwise!
While Philips invented the CDR and this model was the first and easiest to use compared to subsequent models, they have inflexible programming and wear out under heavy use. But these units are 40 years old!
