Hartke HA5500 500watt Bass Head
I originally bought this head when I was first starting to play gigs, and needed some extra "umpfh" to cut through the mix. I like how you can adjust for solid state or tube sound. This is a "hybrid" head, in which it utilizes both solid state and tube preamp sound drivers. This thing CRANKS. I mean, you put this thing 3/4 master volume, boost the tube drive, and get ready! The walls will rattle and picture frames will fall off the walls!! Even though it packs alot of power for the price, there were a couple of downsides. When you use high output/volume, things get reeallly muddy. Nothing really has any character, and all the notes are just a muddy mess (when playing at high volumes). Also, the fan can get really annoying. It puts out a loud "HHUUUUUMMMMMM" the entire time you use it. It ... On the other hand, if you want REAL high quality sound that retains note shape and character at high volume levels, then this may not be the head for you. This is a great head to have until you can afford something a litte better.

Very helpful in figuring out how to get the most out of your Hartke. Yes, you can of course fiddle around with it and get a tone that you think you like but starting with knowledge of what everything does is sort of helpful prior to fiddling. Having said that, you can actually download the manual from Hartke (samsontech) for free and print it if you'd like but I sort of prefer the bound version (easier to keep all the pages together). All in all, I am very happy and I would buy it again... if I needed to.Very helpful in figuring out how to get the most out of your Hartke.
