About this product

Product Information

Steve McQueen's 12 YEARS A SLAVE stars Chiwetel Ejifor as Solomon Northup, a free black man in 1840s America. He makes his living as a fiddle player, and his wife is a teacher. He is shanghaied by a pair of nefarious white men, and soon finds himself on a ship headed to New Orleans where he is informed he will be called Platt and is sold into slavery by an unscrupulous businessman (Paul Giamatti). As he toils away for the kindhearted but conflicted plantation owner Mr. Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch), who recognizes that Platt is both educated and an artist, he butts head with Ford's underlings, especially the casually cruel Tibeats (Paul Dano). After they have a violent altercation, Ford fears for his slave's life and sells him to Mr. Epps (Michael Fassbender), an alcoholic sadist who owns a cotton plantation.Though Epps reads from the bible to his property, as he frequently refers to his slaves, he is himself not immune to sins of the flesh. He has taken the young Patsey (Lupita Nyong'o) - his best cotton picker -- as his lover, and this doesn't sit well at all with his severe wife (Sarah Paulson), whose particular hatred for blacks and her jealousy fuels her many degrading actions toward Patsey. Solomon bides his time, attempts to preserve a modicum of self-respect, and waits for the chance to reclaim his rightful name as well as his family.

  • Is slavery really over?

Someone had recommended this movie to me for study on slavery and it's effects on people and nations. I was very hesitant to even comment on it as it opened up my eyes to the cruel truth......that slavery is still in many ways, alive and well here today. The names and tactics may have been changed, but none the less, its here. All have a name/number today that presumes is their property, yet these things are claimed to be property of the government. So perhaps we have been deceived just as Solomon was beaten into submission into accepting a name and status he never was? I found this movie very powerful, moving, compelling, and realistic in being able to give a good picture of just how depraved people and their created systems can be when based upon the color of someone's skin and status. ...

  • Very good movie with a slightly different take on slavery and obtaining fre

Very good movie with a slightly different plot line. Yes it's about slavery but it's the slavery story you rarely hear about. The story of an educated, talented, well to do, free black man that lives a good life in the North where slavery isn't aspired to. Until he is kidnapped and transported South and sold into slavery on a cotton plantation for 12 years. A very touching, thought provoking story of the human spirit and its determination and will to not only survive but never give up trying to get back the good in life.

  • Read the book also.

This movie is a true account of one man's experience in America One Hundred and Fifty years ago. The book was written by Solomon Northup, the subject of the film. Hence, the book was a true account of the story. The film was true to the account told in the book. However, the book was so well written by Solomon Northup, that the only way the film could have told the story better than the book, is if Solomon Northup, himself, could have directed the film. I recommend the book with the film as a back-up for those who have trouble reading.

  • A Deep Look into Antebellum Slavery in America

Awesome film, and the best part is that it is based on a true story.... Shows the evil of American antebellum slavery. Tells the story of a kidnapped musician who lived in the North, was lured to Washington DC. and kidnapped there, and sent into slavery. Shows all the horrors until he was able to get free, 12 years later.
