A book you won't be able to put down....
Sebastian Junger is one of my favorite reporters, authors, and now filmakers. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in serial homicide and it's mechanics. The fact that Junger and his mother actually had contact with Albert DeSalvo is chilling in itself. Once I saw the picture of the Junger family with DeSalvo in the background, I was immediately hooked and just had to read the book in furious abandon for an explanation. Junger takes us back to the early 1960's when JFK was still in the White House while a monster patrolled the streets Boston and it's suburbs randomly raping and strangling any female that would answer their door after he knocked. Junger delves into the root causation and theories of sexual homicide, as well as providing the reader with an in-depth background on ... Junger delves into the root causation and theories of sexual homicide, as well as providing the reader with an in-depth background on DeSalvo's horrible childhood at the hands of his father. Junger offers his theory as to why DeSalvo turned out to be, at the very least, a violent sexual predator who raped women whenever his urges would manifest themselves beyond any control he may have had over them. The book is as much about the Boston Strangler as it is about a black man accused of one these crimes after he was sent by a cleaning agency to clean one of the victims' homes. In the 1960's, a black man accused of a crime of this magnitude was obviously fighting an uphill battle against forces he had no hope of conquering. Junger explains the crime, the investigation and rush to judgement, it's aftermath, and it's poignant conclusion. What is really interesting is that Junger doesn't emphatically state his opinion as to exactly who he believes was the real Boston Strangler. During the investigation and DeSalvo's subsequent confessions, serious questions arose as to whether he really was the Strangler after all. DNA evidence didn't even exist back then, and DeSalvo was never actually convicted of the murders, instead convicted of several rapes in the Boston area. DeSalvo would later retract his confessions leaving all of us to wonder was he really telling the truth in the beginning, or was he using his five minutes of fame for some unseen motive ? A fascinating book that grips you in it's clenches from the beginning, and which will leave you wondering why you are still awake reading it at 4:00 a.m. in the morning.

Sebastian Junger is one of my favorite authors because of his meticulous research. His mother, when he was a baby, had three workers build an addition onto her house. One of these workers was the Boston Strangler and she found this out later on. She was lucky not to have been one of his victims. The book is about a woman's murder in Belmont. Was it the Boston Strangler or another man who had been hired to clean her house that day? All the facts are there and it is mystfying. Boston strangler revealed ??
this book is about a guy whos mother hired the Boston strangler (she thinks) to do work around her house. The neighbor turns up dead, was this the first person killed by the boston strangler ? The books looks into that idea. The book makes it sound completely possible. You read it and decide for yourself.

A Death in Belmont was an interesting book
I bought this book for my son's college English class. I decided to read it myself. It's about the Boston Strangler and very informative. Parts of it were slow and by the last chapter I was starting to lose interest, as I felt like the same information was being presented over and over.

The Burden of Proof
Junger set himself a considerable challenge - to write a credible nonfiction work centered on a tragedy that left no eyewitnesses in The Perfect Storm. A Death in Belmont is at once less satisfying and yet even more intriguing and unsettling than The Perfect Storm.
