Lab-grade accuracy on a budget, at least above -45dBm
Used Gigatronics sensors and meters are the most affordable lab-quality devices on eBay. HP sensors are wayyyyy too expensive used. Anritsu and Rhode+Schwartz are so difficult to obtain. But Gigatronics are there, if you're patient. So if you're on a budget and don't mind the limitations of the sensor in the faint power regions, this is the economical way to go. Gigatronics sensors (used) can be had on eBay for $100-$250. The associated Gigatronics meters can be found for $50 (for the oldest, single-channel models) to about $150 for the later, dual-channel models. Try finding HP sensors for less than $500. They're far more common at $750. So what performance can you expect from a used Gigatronics sensor, like the 80301A? Between about -45 dBm and +20 dBm the ... Used Gigatronics sensors and meters are the most affordable lab-quality devices on eBay. HP sensors are wayyyyy too expensive used. Anritsu and Rhode+Schwartz are so difficult to obtain. They're far more common at $750. So what performance can you expect from a used Gigatronics sensor, like the 80301A? Between about -45 dBm and +20 dBm the accuracy/linearity/repeatability are within half a decibel, which is excellent, and approaches HP performance. But below -45 dBm, the values are wholly unreliable. I only use it with signals stronger than -30 dBm. So it's a great buy. For Ham radio, this is an excellent choice because you're working with output wattages that would require the use of an external fixed attenuator anyway. But, if you're fussy, then know that this faint-signal behavior at low powers is independent of meter. I have tested it against an 8541C, an 8651A and an 8652A. On each meter, this sensor stumbles below about -45 dBm. And it's not just this sensor. I see similar behavior with a pair of 80701A sensors... perhaps with a usable floor closer to -50 dBm. But the datasheet specs for the 80701A claim accuracy down to -60 dBm and the claimed floor of the 80301A goes as low as -72dBm. I'm not seeing performance down that low. I'm using an Anritsu MG3641N as the signal source and can verify the accuracy of the output attenuator against an Instek GSP-810 spectrum analyzer. So, despite not meeting published specifications, the sensor is absolutely reliable over a usable span of about sixty dB with sufficient accuracy for ham (and similar) applications and represents the cheapest path to laboratory-grade performance for the hobbyist and small repair shop.
