Instead of spending hours looking up a plant, whether online or asking a specialist, get this book! If you even know one of the criteria (flower type, plant type, leaf type), Newcomb will guide you in identifying the plant. Newcomb begins with explaining and educating you about the basic criteria, and asking the basic questions that will enable you to identify the plant. The cross reference is easy to navigate. Some illustrations are in color, while others are drawings. In either case, they are good enough to compare to what your eyes are viewing. This is a must have for herbalists and adventures of the wild!

This is the book of choice for wildflower taxonomy classes and even government botanists everywhere I've botanized around the country (which so far is only as far west as MN, and south to NC/TN). Very simple to use, accurate sketches, and a great selection of species. Definitely not comprehensive, but very rarely have I run across a plant I cannot find in there. Somewhat limited use when flowering parts are not available, but the index includes common and scientific names to search with as well. A great reference companion to keep on hand for anyone with an interest or job that relates to plant ID.
Generally highly regarded as a field guide for Northeast US and I concur. Easy to follow ID process. Good size.

Nice reference book once you figure out how to use it. Helps if you get a tutorial if you are a beginner.
