Faithful to its no-noise mantra, this effects unit features true hardwired bypass functionality for pristine audio signal output to an amp even when turned off.While sporting a simple design with little need for accessories, the Dunlop MXR M135 is packed with plenty of features. A single large Trigger Level knob sets the level of suppression needed. The yellow LED light labeled Gate indicates when the suppression function is activated and unwanted frequencies are cut off. A blue LED indicates when the pedal is turned on via the footswitch. A useful function in noisy applications or with high-gain signals such as guitars with extreme bass distortion or guitar overdrive, this noise gate pedal includes a button that extends the suppression range further for cleaner amp output. For fine-tuning your noise suppression threshold, the noise gate has a three-way selector for hiss and mid and low frequencies. This selector is sure to match the problem caused by electric guitars and other pedals in the loop, providing great noise reduction. The aluminum enclosure and switch elements of the MXR Smart Gate have been engineered with rough, on-the-road use in mind.     Noise free with a plus

    I think I've already reviewed this once before but I liked it so much I bought another for my second board. It's easy to use, has all the features I need. I almost went with the Noise clamp but the smart gate does something that I doubt most pedal type gates will. If you set it correctly you can get subtle volume swells for the pretty stuff. I hardly use it unless my comp is on but I like it. I play country, rock, blues, and 70-present top 40 and I use a fair amount of gain for much of my lead stuff. Noise free!

    Does all you could want in a noise gate

    This pedal works really well at keep feedback suppressed at high volume and high gain settings. It's simple to operate. There are a few settings so just try them and you get it down quick. It really works well so you have to realize that you have to turn it off if you want to sustain feedback. And if the settings are too high it will not let the sound come out right away it slowly builds to full volume which can be useful. But is easily avoided setting the right levels.

    The MXR Smartgate won't alter your guitar tone.

    I tried another brands noisegate pedal and although it did a great job of killing unwanted noise it altered my guitar tone. I checked out a few reviews of the MXR Smartgate on you tube and bought one online. I am only impressed with it - it works well. It,s built to last like all MXR pedals. There's no need to read a manual to work out how to use it - just isolate the kind of noise you want to eliminate with the selector switch and adjust the trigger level to suit. If you are using reverb or delay pedals the smartgate will kill the tail of these effects so I have positioned it on my board just before the delay and reverb units and after all the modulation and distortion units ( of course ).     Great budget pedal, welcome alternative to the Boss noise gate.

    I needed a good noise gate, but didn't have a big enough budget to drop $200+ on something like an ISP Decimator G-string. I found this little guy for a very reasonable price. For its size and price range, it does its job very well. Though it doesn't cut feedback and noise as well as I hoped it would, you can't beat a 70 MXR noise gate. Eventually I may upgrade to the ISP, but until then the smartgate is more than good enough.
