About this product

Product Information

Akira Kurosawa's stunning reconception of Shakespeare's MACBETH is a dark samurai drama, set in feudal Japan. As the film begins, two soldiers--Washizu (Toshirô Mifune) and Miki (Minoru Chiaki)--find themselves lost in a dense forest during a powerful thunderstorm. Seemingly unable to leave the woods, they encounter a ghostly old woman who predicts that Washizu will soon rise to power. At the goading of his ruthless wife, Asaji (Isuzu Yamada), Washizu embarks on a murderously ambitious path and quickly fulfills the prophecy. However, his ascension is cursed by his brutal actions and soon opposition arises to challenge his blood-stained rule. One of the finest Shakespeare adaptations to appear in any medium, Kurosawa's THRONE OF BLOOD is covered in an entrancingly macabre web. The always-amazing Mifune gives one of his greatest performances as the haunted yet unrelenting Lord Washizu, while Yamada portrays the eeriest version of Lady Macbeth to ever grace the screen or stage. A master of reinterpretation, Kurosawa incorporates strong elements of Japanese Noh drama into the film, and the result adds to the somber and chilling mood. The film's highlight, however, is the tense and skillfully paced finale, which features Washizu literally up against the wall as he faces an army of vengeful archers.

    Foreign Film Master Strike Again

Kurosawa has become one of my favorite foreign film makers. Another adaptation of a Shakespeare play ("ran" is also a Shakespeare adaptation). Even set in a different time period and radically different location & culture, it has all of the impact of the original and more. Definitely a favorite.

  • A classic! Not for everyone, but you should try it at least.

Arika Kurosawa’s Throne of Blood is a Japanese Macbeth, a film from the late 1950s. I found that this production was excellent as it sets a dominating bleak and empty atmosphere. It gives the film an underlying depressive feeling and a sense of foreboding. This black and white production, with barren landscapes and foggy clouds still conveys this to a new audience, over 50 years later. Much of the acting was stylised; a thing which I didn’t mind in this context. As the Japanese language is completely inaccessible, this acting technique helps to get the message across. The stylised mannerisms, speech tone, timbre and colour all manage to convey the basic emotions, postures and characterisation. My main grouch with the film is that the subtitles are woefully inadequate and miss the mark by a ...

  • MacBeth in Old Japan

Akira Kurasawa was one of the few geniuses of world cinema. His classic films are too numerous to mention. This film is a retelling of Shakespeare's MacBeth in which we actually see Birnam Wood come to Dunsinane. Highly stylized, evoking images from Noh theatre, this British story is rendered against the landscape of Japan, painted in blood. It's worth whatever it costs.

  • Kurosawa and the Scottish Play

Imagine, if you will, that all the characters in Shakespeare's "Macbeth" have reincarnated into 16th Century feudal Japan -- the drama, the gut-wrenching angst and inner conflict conveyed through simple body gestures and carefully directed movement against a background of eerie fog with magnificent camera angles and the contrasts that black and white film format allows. The costumes and sets do their best to replicate the historical era. Simply yummy. Can't get enough Kurosawa.

  • More than an adaptation

"Throne of Blood" is an adaptation of macbeth set in feudal Japan, filmed in black & white in the late 50s. The director remains completely faithful to Shakespeare's story, but changes the setting and creates a unique take on a classic play. Every shot in the film is beautifully composed, and the acting, though very slow and old fashioned, is dramatic and captivating. The character of Lady Macbeth is very different from the way I have seen her played, and it adds something to this version. The pace may be a bit slow for some viewers, but if you like classic films and don't mind reading subtitles, this is a fine piece of art.
