This is the only book I have seen on the topic of herbal remedies that is written from a Mexican-American perspective. I found it to be fascinating reading. I bought the book largely for the historical information that it contains; part one of the book is about the history of Mexcican-American herbal remedies. The book contains an overview of relevant history including background information about the Aztecs and their culture and religion. It also contains profiles of several well-known herbalists. There is also a chapter that explains the Nahuatl system of identifying and naming plants. (Nahuatl was the language of the Aztecs.) This first part of the book is the part that I am giving 5 stars to. The rest of the book may well deserve 5 stars also; it certainly seems comprehensive! However, I have not tested out any of the herbal remedies for myself, so I would rather not speak for whether they are actually effective or not; I have no idea. I can say with certainty that the book is well organized. It gives a list of names of each herb including the English name, the botanical name, the Nahuatl name, and any other known names. It also gives a brief overview of each herb and how it is used- whether it should be prepared as a tea to drink or a salve to apply externally, etc. It also identifies which part(s) of the plant should be used, what ailments it can be used to treat, and any known cautions for how the herb should not be used (or under what conditions it should not be used). I would recommend this book as worthwhile reading material to anyone who is interested in either herbal remedies or Mexican-American culture and history.Read full review
I like that all the plants have scientific and regional names in multiple languages. It also covers uses and contraindications. There is a wealth of knowledge in there both about the plants and the cultural meanings of them.
