This item is really for diamond testing. Not so much for gemstones. It will indicate if your piece is glass by not lighting up. It will light one notch, or randomly 2 so you know it's a true gem stone. If you hold stone to light and see even one bubble inside (be sure it's not ding on surface) it's glass. you can test that on your own. It may work better on diamonds but I didn't test it for that.
