This axe is a bargain axe. You'll get good value for the money, and can certainly do some extensive grinding on the head to render it useful. With about an hour on a bench mounted slack belt grinder, and progressing through wet-sand up to 1,000 grit, the edge can be honed to hair-shaving sharpness, so the steel is certainly adequate. The haft is extremely thick, and needs to be shaped down with a spoke shave, draw knife, and sandpaper. Haft comes with thick laquer which needs removal anyway. Haft is hung with permabond in eye of axe. It was a very sloppy execution. That said, because of the cost, it is a good bargain.

As it was advertised as sharpened, I expected it to have a workable edge. Something I could work on to make it better. I could literally drop the edge on my palm from a foot above it & suffer no damage. I had to take it to a shop & have an edge put on it. It does not look like the pictures either. The poll isn't polished & you cannot see the handle attached to the head. Looks like it was welded over or something. I will say the grain orientation is great. I had hopes of getting a budget axe I could make into a good useable tool. Time will tell is it at least lasts.

I had wanted to get a bigger, heavier all metal ax, seemed like it would work better but they are so expensive and heavy (to mail) Decided to try this one. It came VERY fast, and even though it's not too heavy, the head part is heavy, full size and sharp and works good for splitting firewood. Didn't have to pay a lot and it's really easier to use with the (hard) wood handle.

Pros: Good quality, good weight, and good size. Cons: Very dull, had to file an edge onto it.

I carry it on my pack during camp trips and has held up well. Light enough (3lbs) to be worth the pack weight.
