Excellent performance for a kit lens

I got this for an SL2 to use mainly for video recording. It is small, light weight and has very good image quality. Color, sharpness, focus speed and image stabilization are all very good. It isn't a Canon L lens but for only $85 it punches way about its weight class.

    Canon lens review

To be honest, I don't know if it's a good value. With the lens in auto focus mode as it should be for a camera newbie like myself, it should be easier to use. The camera will not work at all with the lens in auto focus mode. I am not proficient enough yet to be using manual focus. My son, who owned the camera prior to me, and had just used it, cannot figure out what the problem is. It works as it should with his same lens. Therefore it is determined this lens is the issue. I was hoping to take this on a trip I am going on to get some good pictures/ memories, but this does not seem it is going to happen. I'm sure the lens new is very good, in fact I know it is. This one just does not work as it is supposed to and I am somewhat disappointed.

  • Solid performer for the price

Better than the previous version in terms of mechanics, noise and tactile feedback. The stepper motor (STM) allows for quick silent autofocus that is optimized for smooth video focus smoothing. The precious non STM version was noisy (not good for video) and not as positive in its focus acquisition. Mechanically the zoom ring is smoother, feels more precise and free of roughness. Same with the focus ring which is wider and easier to grip. Optically the lens is capable of quality results as long as one finds a copy of this lens that was properly assembled and the lens elements are properly centred. Because of its low cost there probably is minimal quality control at the factory. Canon’s image stabilization is not affected by the low cost of this lens and performs well which is a good ...

  • Impressively sharp, lightweight lens with image stabilization

Read online reviews that said lens was sharp. It is sharp, better than one would expect for an inexpensive lens. All you need to make beautiful, sharp images on a cropped sensor Canon!! Lens all plastic, including the lens mount. One can wonder about durability but it makes lens nice and light, great for hiking. Love the image stabilization too

  • Shorter, lighter, slower, but very sharp

Having owned several 18-55mm f3.5 lenses, I wanted the new f4.0 and I am not disappointed. The image quality is the same for both lenses so the main difference is that the f4 doesn't rattle like the f3.5 does and the zoom feels much tighter.
