This is a book right outta my library. I have sold some too! Why? The best reasons I gathered were Vincent Thomas' Lombardi's dedication, tenacity, a winning attitude that those who got to hear and speak with him were as taken with him as I was! A Football player himself, he pressured himself as no other could, for Mr. Lombardi had the toughest man on his tail when it came to winning..VINCE LOMBARDI, himself! He was toughly, Jesuit trained and kept these strong ethics with him through life, and in most aspects of his life. He was fairly quiet and the writer, "Dave Maraniss" saw this also, as Vince had his mind and that was his great advantage over of most that he had done. Vince and Dave settled in and the conversation brought out some facts I never knew! Dave ended up with an enchanting story that mezmorized all that read about the man who lived when "PRIDE" was still foremost in a coaches mind, if you were Vince Lombardi. He took the "Green Bay Packers", a lackluster team who did not see victories as they did when their 1st coach led them to 225 victories, but, in many more years than Vince had the time to. Vince saw his troubled troup, who found victory a slippery snake, and just could NOT hold the ball and never grab that win, as they did NOT have the inward drive that was soon garnished out of each and everyone of the "Packers" by "The Ol' Man", Vince! It took a while, but Vince instilled into his men what he instilled into Dave Moraniss and myself...I felt more of a human being reading and re-reading this book and after reading through it once more before I offered one on "eBay" just this past month. M~O~S~T~L~Y, I wanted this to get into the hands of a family that shared & loved what I loved so much about this book: AND!, it wasn't football~!~! The drive to tread onward in this earth, through unobtainable goals, through the tough times, and take the easy times with a pinch of salt, and leave the book done on the last page with the smile that I had with it as I finished reading and researching both Maraniss and surely, Vince Lombardi. He took this half-team of semi players, and molded their minds, hearts, comradery, and even their families and stirred in them a strong will to push beyond what they even thought they had in them. What happened~?~? You will have to read this book and then you shall know why I felt a cleanliness, inwardly about this group who won SuperBowls I and II, right after the leagues of the AFL and NFL had formed, back in the early 1960's. Vince rewarded his men beyond what they had worked for: he also rewarded the wives for their great backing power, They helped muster their men, and Vince never forgot that the women of these hard-pushed, winner-driven men, should be forgotten for their great contribution they had made to the team the wives were awarded w/Mink stolls after Superbowl I in 1961.And, there was so much more to be written, as you shall see. Myself? I am changed~!~! I never said that I enjoyed Football as this is NOT of football! IT is LIFE~!~! Sadly, Vince Died 09/03/1970 from intestinal Cancer! I still see 'The Ol' Man', hands clasped walkin' the line, looking down, then accessing what was happening, and quietly planned the Superbowl Wins in 1960 and 1961. Vince was inducted into the "Pro. Football of Fame"(1971) The SuperBowl Trophy was renamed the Vince Lombardi Trophy! ESPN named him COACH of the Century! Not bad, Not bad at all!Read full review

Excellent book! We need another Lombardi, except he wouldn't be politically correct today.

I liked the peak behind the Wizard's Curtain that the story provides. We look past the myth and the icon that was Vince Lombardi and see the man underneath. I have a deeper appreciation for the magic he cast having gained a deeper appreciation of the man who worked the magic. He was a simple, straightforward man who worked and willed himself to excellence and left a legacy that shines to this day.
