Notes
Two chamber works performed by the sterling Serenata of Santa Fe. 'Five Pieces of the Puzzle' (for oboe, clarinet, piano and string quartet) is a lyrical conflux of melodies in a variety of moods and costumes. Like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle, the movements in the suite share themes - a color, a gesture - while remaining individual and distinct. The effect is a kaleidoscopic representation of a mosaic, shifting softly or abruptly, an array of fragments cordially interacting while suggesting relationships and experiences beyond the space and time of these five pieces of music. 'Arabesco' (for soprano, oboe and strings) is a 3-movement setting of classical Arabic and Persian mystical poems in a French translation. The mood is reflective, passionate, exotic, warm and joyful. (French text and English translation enclosed in jewel case.)
