I discovered Breaking Benjamin through their most recent effort, Phobia, which is an excellent album. We are not alone is a good album, released about 2 years prior to Phobia. On this 2004 effort, I would say that half of the songs are really solid, while the rest is good hard rock. Their sound is like Tool, but with a more standard alternative approach. They sound loud and electric, but without the extensive progressive side of Tool. Sometimes, they are able to recreate Toolesque 4/4 grooves and they are pretty good at it. I would recommend to everybody who likes to discover a good loud alternative rock band, and I cannot wait for their next album.
Another second, "breakout" album and I'm getting nauseous from the lack of depth here. Beyond "So Cold," there isn't much to brag about, sadly. If that single flops, we never get the Phobia album, "Diary of Jane," and a cool vid for "Surrogates." I guess that's the whole point of the second album. It'll make you, or break you. Everyone's daring you: "You did it the first time, so do it again," or "You got your big label, now it's time to earn those paychecks." I got this just to complete my collection. I love Breaking Benjamin way too much to not have ALL of their albums. :)
Solid, meticulous, guitar and bass driven rock, capturing for the most part the energy of the live act, just more perfect, more mixed, more Ben. Hard, honest, hitting lyrics that I love to quote in my life to people and to myself when I'm having a good fun loving time or a rough angry bitter time. Classic music and artistry all around. I've been listening to this album and this band for years and finally had to own my own copy of the physical CD. I exercise to this album all the time, with the band's others - a good pace for walking or running. I especially love the tracks Simple Design, Follow, Breakdown, Break My Fall and Away. As good as either their debut or their latest, Phobia. I wouldn't want to do without any of the three.
Heard one song on Pandora and liked the sound. Bought this album used on Ebay for a decent price. I guess if you have listened to these guys before you would know what to expect. The lyrics are very bubble gum and almost unlistenable. I would prefer random words strung together than some of the stuff these guys write....For a supposedly hard rock/metal/alternative band the lyrics are especially weak. The music is pretty basic but has a decent sound, nothing complicated in the composing either. I might listen to this album every once in a while but definitley not Sevendust or Alter Bridge those bands at least attempt to put out something different and not so cookie cutter.
This is a good CD. I had the album on mp3 for a very long time and listened to them on my walkman mobile phone for ages. I decided I really liked them and bought the CD on Ebay at a good price. Nu metal and even grunge overtones, this band rocks. I first heard of BB when I heard "so cold", which really shines, and have to say that that is one of their stronger tracks. The rest are not bad. I have given the tracks ratings: So Cold - 5/5 Simple Design - 4/5 Follow - 3/5 Firefly - 4/5 Break My Fall - 2/5 Forget It - 4/5 Sooner Or Later - 3/5 (only the opening riff is catchy: it's a single, though) Breakdown - 3.5/5 Away - 2/5 Believe - 2/5 Rain - 3.5/5 Average : 3.27/5
