In 100 years North America will be remembered for 2 positive contributions to art. Orsen Welles and Neko Case. Neko Case could sing the phone book and make it sound poignant. But she instead melts your heart with such human sentiment layered in primitive coyote howls. Fox confessor is every macabre fairy tale uttered by Grimm syruped with a thick coating of experienced cynicism. It is filtered through such a sugary stained glass pane that you almost forget that you are smiling while a lonely red fox bays to the grey night sky. There is NOTHING in American contemporary art quite like Neko Case. Nothing at all. Biographical pain. As if the people in Case's personal life must fear being the subject of sad murder ballads. In the words of Charles Foster Kane "You can't buy a bag of peanuts in this town without someone writing a song about you." Fox confessor brings the entire bag and then some. Eat up. Leave the shells on the floor. PS Lion's Jaw is probably the most beautiful thing to ever come out of a speaker. _ R HarrisRead full review
The perfect counter argument to anyone who says there isn’t great country music out there; The songwriting, storytelling and emotion poured into this record is truly immaculate.

This is an example of an excellent musician getting ruined by a lousy producer. In live concerts of Neko Case she has a gorgeous voice with just a bit of an edge. It draws you in, it tickles your brain. This CD manages to be recorded 'perfectly' which knocks the edges off her singing and makes it, well, bland. The songs are excellent - and I truly like the album - but I'd rather download the (free) concert from NPR.org / Music / live concerts.
I first heard Hold On Hold On on the T.V. on a cable channel...I kept hearing it..not knowing who it was..but loved the song...then I heard the song again in Starbucks...I asked WHO IS THIS!! I wrote her name down Neko Case (cool name also I think) and ordered it on ebay :) All the songs are great...similar style voice but with more soul/jazz than Mazzy Star..I play it alot..and still am not tired of it. :) 5 thumbs up from me!
As good as the reviews I read. Interesting, literate, compelling songs performed simply and beautifully. Case's voice is pretty but not cute, easy on the ears. The lyrics are enigmatic, elliptical, but accessible. A really unique release, and well worth the time and money.
