“Stormbringer” is such a brilliant metal album. The last studio release featuring the legendary Mark-III line-up. Probably the best after the Mark-II. I sometimes compare it with “Somewhere In Time” of Iron Maiden, because there’s a lot of similarities between both albums: both feature great jewels and an incredible line-up, but both are sometimes forgot and underrated. Oh! And also they’re both produced by the legendary Martin Birch! The opening title-song is just incredible. Powerful, killer and raw! The solid sound and vocals of Coverdale/Hughes gave the song an excellent sinister halo. An what can I say of Blackmore/Lord/Paice’s contribution, they’re simply too much for words…But you may probably expect an aggressive and filled with strength solid album if you only listen the first track. But, in fact, the next pieces, “Hold On”, “The Gypsy” or “Highball Shooter” show a really different sound, a bit funky, bluesy and melodic. And that’s obviously thanks to Glenn Hughes’ contribution on vocals and song-writing. But, anyway, that’s really cool! Deep Purple is one of those bands which give you the chance to enjoy different sounds, productions and line-ups. That makes this band special. In fact, the sound of “Stormbringer” is really similar to Glenn Hughes last solo records, specially “Building The Machine”, on which curiously, he covers a song from “Stormbribger”. Another special thing about this release is that there are a couple of awesome songs’ style that you can only find here: “Holy Man”, with Hughes as lead singer, and the excellent ballad “Soldier of Fortune”, recovered by Whitesnake and Blackmore’s Night on their shows. That kind of songs are only in this album, so don’t go searching in any other Purple release. So, I definitively recommend it, although we all know Ritchie didn’t like and left, also because some other reasons, after some shows. But this is really a deep Deep Purple album that any melodic metal fan will enjoy.Read full review
