If you liked Lake of Tears' "A Crimson Cosmos" from a few years back, you'll probably like this one. It's similar in its heavy psychedelic leanings and big sound, while throwing in a healthy dose of Sisters of Mercy-type darkness...especially in the vocals of the title track. I listened to this one on the heels of their new (and kind of disappointing) CD "Moons and Mushrooms," and was totally blown away. "Black Brick Road" is everything I hoped "Moons and Mushrooms" would be and then some. Hard to believe this one came first. Lake of Tears is an extremely interesting and occasionally brilliant band who has evolved from the pretty standard death-metal stylings of their debut "Greater Art" into a still-very-heavy band with a unique sense of melody and power. The one area that makes or breaks their discs, quite frankly, is the lyrics. With English being lead vocalist Daniel Brennare's second language, the resultant phrasing in the lyrics is either charming or cringe-worthy. On this disc, it is both charming and powerful.
