Heavy, dark, grooves hard, and the cowbell just makes it groove even harder. This album has been given a bad rap, but it is really not bad at all. In fact, it is an amazing album from start to finish. If you like Pantera but are not a fan of this album, give it a few more spins, I think you will find that it gets in your head more than their other albums.

This CD features Metal of the heaviest alloy with blazing, genre-defining guitar from start to finish. The hoarse, shouted vocals may rapidly become a bit grating to casual listeners. The songwriting on this disc isn't up to the standard of some other Pantera offerings, but if thrash-metal is the soundtrack for your life, The Great Southern Trendkill will satisfy.

This album has been labeled by many as the red-headed-stepchild of Pantera's reign. I don't see it that way. It is the natural progression of what happens to a band who toured their bodies and brains to the point of exhaustion, theretofore largely slamming the same powercords to a few mainstay songs that were catchy. But Trendkill was more hardcore in nature and never pretended to be anything else. You could hear the plateauing of Dimebag's playing heavily here. His style became full of powerslides, the technique increasingly used when creativity is disappearing or boredom is setting in. The fact that many of the simpletons of their fan-base could not adjust to the style of the album is not a bad reflection of Pantera. But the lesser sales did motivate them to dig deep and belch-out REINVENTING THE STEEL, which on it's own merit is THE BEST PANTERA ALBUM EVER for the reason that it was the first album that they did that was not full of cliches; but rather, the end result of the band's best evolution. Trendkill had to happen to make REINVENTING THE STEEL possible.Read full review
