I love the album since I am a guitar player, it has some classic Rock and Roll progressions and nice leads. I decided to purchase because those songs are easy to play, good to put together and fun. What I dislike: The accelerated version of Electric Ocean for me is nowhere near the original, the original song has in fact a tempo and guitar delay effect that does give the sense that they refer to an Ocean effect. The new rushed version lacks the feel. The song Born to be Wild cover sounds like just any cover band would play at a local bar. Maybe a little bit more of The Cult in it would be better. The rest of the songs are great and remind me that The Cult is not just the popular Fire Woman song that most people relate them to. There is a lot of The Cult music themes and variety out there! This album is a classic and great to keep.Read full review
I got into the Cult in the 80's thanks to the song Firewoman off of Sonic Temple and I immediately went out and bought the album after hearing the single. I wasn't disappointed. That entire album is exceptional. With great songs like Firewoman, Sun King, Edie (Caio Baby), and Sweet Soul Sister I immediately liked the band. Billy Duffy had a lot of cool guitar riffs and Ian Astbury's vocals reminded me a lot of Jim Morrison and Glen Danzig. So immediately Sonic Temple was in my rotation. Then I heard a Cult song on the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and I knew it wasn't on Temple. I knew I had to know what song it was. Turns out the song was Love Removal Machine off of Electric. I then bought Electric, and I was surprised how good this album was. Electric is filled with cool guitar riff after cool guitar riff. The guitar riff for Wild Flower is kind of a ripoff of an AC/DC tune off of High Voltage. I forget which one it is. It's either Rock and Roll Singer or It's A Long Way To The Top If You Wanna Rock and Roll. But the song stops at that riff as far as being a ripoff. The rest of the song is nothing like the AC/DC song. Ian Astbury's belting vocals and Billy Duffy's cool guitar riffs make sure of that. Not that I don't love AC/DC (I do by the way), but the Cult make the song their own, and the pre-Sonic album has additional cool tracks as well. Peace Dog, Lil' Devil, Outlaw, and King Contrary Man are filled with cool riffs. Love Removal Machine is my favorite song from the album. From the opening riff, I was hooked by the cool song. I especially like Ian's vocals on this one. He shouts on a lot of his songs (which isn't a jab at him, it's just his singing style, kind of like James Hetfield from Metallica), but on this one he really does a great job of singing. I especially like how he starts the second verse with his repeating of Baby. One word repeated five times never sounded so cool. The only disappointment on the album for me is the cover of Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild. It's an alright effort, but I would've just left the classic alone, especially if it's definitely worse than the original. Besides that one misstep, I think Electric is a definite classic from the 80's. It is an album filled with cool riffs and outstanding vocals. The Cult are a good band that have stood the test of time, and their songwriting is a nice alternative from what you'd usually listen to from the 80's.Read full review
Not their best album but man does it rock! There’s a couple of amazing tracks that make this album punch above its weight. After this the Cult hot new highs. Great place to start.
