Any fan of Chicago blues, or just plain brilliant guitar playing, should make themselves aware of Jody Williams. He was one of the most skilled of sidemen in the 1950s Chicago blues scene (Howlin' Wolf's 'Evil', Bo Diddley's 'Who Do You Love', for example) and made some extraordinary records of his own ('Lucky Lou', 'You May'). So innovative was his music that others lifted his ideas (notably for the enduring 'Love Is Strange'). Lawsuits for plagiarism didn't fall Williams's way and in disgust he quit music to go to work for Xerox (you can't make it up). The good news is that in this century he came back to play and record. These 1954-62 recordings are more than worthy.
