I read this book as a child, or at least I thought I had - turns out I must've read the Readers Digest Condensed version - there were things in it I definitely would've remembered had I read them before! I purchased it because my book club was reading it. It's an insightful story about a girl growing up poor in early 20th century Brooklyn, with her younger brother, alcoholic "Irish singing waiter" father, and stoic, hardworking, but loving, mother. Francie's parents' hopes for their children's education include a novel "savings bank", a clever strategy for attending a better grammar school, and dogged determination. Imaginative Francie's and down-to-earth Neely's adventures and coming of age are warmly and frankly told. If you're a book lover, like me, you'll appreciate Francie's plan to read every book in the local public library from A to Z. Highly recommended.Read full review

Great story. I've read it at least 3 times. No wonder it was such a hit and so many people wrote fan mail to the author. I've also given away copies of it. Bought this one for me mum.
Great story !!!! Loved every page
