I can say that there are very few authors I have read who have so been able to capture the mind of hebrew teachings within the ministry of Christ. Bell offeres a fresh perspective on what it can look like by following the way of Jesus. I do have some questions about the basis of his theology in areas where he claims things like the virgin birth are no longer necessary to essential Christian doctrines. Seems like he attempts to lead with the pragmatic instead of the theological. I can't say enough of how Rob's teaching has challenged me to learn what it is to just follow Jesus my Rabbi, but I think at times he leaves to much room for bad theology to form which overtime will even turn into bad practice. What I can say that has challenged me is the idea that "Love Wins"... Like the guy in the review before I would not say that I have everything figured out, yet it would be wrong to say that we simply have nothing figured out at all. Great book to ponder and chew on for sure, but like Bell even says in his book that he does not have it all figured out. To the "emerging" Christians, I would challenge you to attempt to discern through this with the same critical eye which you tend to look at typical Evangelicalism and don't fall trap into the same trend that many do to the opposite end of the spectrum... Anyway need to re-iderate that LOVE WINS...Read full review
Rob Bell presents Christianity in a way that tends to be abrasive to those who do not have a deep grasp of what it mean to have a Christian RELATIONSHIP rather than RELIGION. Again I will say that if you are a "the world is BLACK and WHITE" person this book may offend and/or shock you. That being said I think this book has given me more insight into the Bible and my relationship with God than any other I have read. It is a lighter read with Old Testament insights, humor and real life applications. This is a book for "emergent" or "contemporary minded" Christians who aren't afraid to ask questions about their faith and admit that we, as humans, do not have it all figured out. Again if you know that you have the whole "Christian thing" nailed you should not waste your time with this book. Believe me you will be ripping Bell's theology left and right if you can't admit that you have legitimate questions about your walk. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.Read full review
This is the best book I have ever read. If you feel you are at a low in your spiritual life, this will pick you up and get you going! If you are at a spiritual high, it will motivate you even more. This is a must read for all Christians. Or, if you are wondering about who God is, then this is the book for you. Or, if you are one of the ones that says, "I do not like organized religion", then this is the book for you. I cannot say anything bad about this book. It was a great inspiration for me and my wife. It is a book that makes you think and rethink your stance on being a Christian. I have recommended this book to almost everyone I know - Christian and non-Christian. If you like this book then check out the NOOMA DVDs on NOOMA.com. God Bless!
Velvet Elvis is one of the greatest books I have ever read. It is a book that allows you to safely question the Christian faith without destroying your beliefs in the process. It takes you to a place in your mind and heart you might not have been before, but a part of you has always thought about. I reccomend all who are looking for a unique way of viewing Christianity to read this book and even those who, though they are O.K. with the traditional Christian process, but are searching for more to also read this book, you will not be disapointed! After reading this book I think you will come to realize that we can't just sit back and be Sunday Christians, that we need to continue to question and repaint the fiath. That we need to understand what it means to be a Christian right here and right now in this day and this time. I get excited thinking about it and I think you will too!Read full review
The book and audio are simply great reads. Rob takes you on a journey of how today's Christianity does not quite get it. Reminds us that Jesus is person of our faith, not the beliefs we have. He gives us glimpses into Jesus' teachings and how they were more about living in reality than trying to teach more doctrine. I loved his illustrations of the trampleen and how our theology needs to like it. We need to bounce it and stretch the strings of our beliefs to even attempt to grasp the greatness of the God in heaven. Who is He? The great, I AM. Chew on it for a while.
