Haven't done any recording, but i really did not buy for that. Once i figured out that i needed to choose AV as a source on my tv and not composite, it plays good. Much better than a newer panasonic i had that either would not load or took several trys to get the dvd out. This is an older model, but i had one before and loved it so am also satisfied with this one. So glad it came with remote.

When this was advertised as "Fully Tested" I assumed that meant that the loading door for DVDs operated by using the Open/Close button on the unit. It does not work. The door for loading DVDs will not open without a remote control. I have had to purchase a Remote Control unit just so I could play DVDs. It leads me to wonder what was tested fully; certainly NOT the ability to load a DVD.

This item was received as described. It needs a remote control, which I had, to access all of the features. The picture and sound quality is good. The unit does not have a coax output should one be needed by a purchaser. The case has some wear albeit okay for its age. The DVD drawer needed some coaxing and oiling to open however it now works okay.

A working VHS player was needed to continue playing a large inventory of VHS tapes. It was not easy finding a working VHS player. I found the price for this used Sony was excellent, since it also played DVD's, an unexpected bonus. In addition, it was possible to contact Sony online and download an operating document for this specific unit. When it arrived well packaged and in excellent condition I was able to use the operating document to attach the unit to a new Smart TV and found that a separately ordered remote and the unit worked perfectly. The remote was previously rated separately. I can now get rid of a very old TV with built-in VHS player. Perfect

The Dvd/Vcr quality is excellent. The machine is very light weight and the ventilation is such that another piece of equipment can be placed on top of it, depending on the weight. The terminals on the back for hook-up do not include the cable TV terminal so that the 3 separate audio/video (red,white,yellow) cables must be used for connecting equipment.
