Product Information

Edna Ferber's best-selling family saga was the source of Stevens' sprawling epic, which stars Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean, in his last film appearance. When Texas cattleman Bick Benedict (Hudson) goes to Virginia in the early 1920s to buy a prize stallion, he falls in love with Leslie Lynnton (Taylor), an aristocratic, independent-minded beauty, and they quickly marry. He takes her back to Reata, his 600,000-acre ranch, where sister Luz (Mercedes McCambridge), the family matriarch, does her best to make Leslie feel unwelcome. Leslie is appalled by the second-class status accorded to women and racist attitudes toward the local Mexicans, neither of which seem to bother her husband. Out of compassion, she befriends surly ranch hand Jett Rink (James Dean), who comes to worship her from afar, envying Bick for both his wealth and his wife. He strikes oil on land bequeathed to him by the deceased Luz and his wealth and power grow apace. As the years pass, the bewildered Bick often finds his children thwarting his wishes and criticizing his beliefs, pushing the millionaire to question his values for the first time in his life. The film's outstanding cast, which also features Dennis Hopper, Sal Mineo, Carroll Baker, Earl Holliman, and Chill Wills, inject vitality into a project that occasionally suffers from longueurs.

    Truly a great film.

    The acting by Rock Hudson and James Dean is the best of each of their careers. Elizabeth Taylor also gave a great portrayal of her character. The scenery and setting really were characters moving the story forward. Also, the featurettes included in the Special Features really enhance the experience.

    GIANT ! The best story of the great state of Texas !

    Love all of the characters, seeing the family become one who stands beside each other through good and bad. Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean give especially great performances. Aging of the characters were graceful and production was in-line with the book. Highly recommend watching the Benedict family in all of their glory !

    Texas IS the Giant

    When I saw this one I was very impressed with all the performances and especially young Liz Taylor and her male co-star. I thought the whole movie was pretty good but particularity sad about the way young Tex turned out to be a drunk. He had it all and then lost it all. That seems to be the way of the world when too much is given to one person. I did not care for the ending though. I thought it was very weak with the two babies looking out at the world from their crib and the two calves in there too. It was the beginning of illegal immigration to this country that has become such a problem. It seems that there were those taking advantage of other people as far back as the 50's. This movie is a typical Hollywood propaganda piece done in Texas style.

    My All TimeFavorite Movie

    Great Movie. Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor. Setting is West Texas and really addresses the political and cultural atmosphere of that time period. Best picture. Best actor and Best actress in 1956.

    Texas Tale~ GREAT~ Classic James Dean at his BEST~

    Texas Tale begins in the early part of the century.Benedict (Handsome Rock Hudson) has thousands of acres of Texas Ranch and he is the KING. Searching for a Stallion to improve his lines he stumbles across a Southern Aristocrat (Elizabeth Taylor is Gorgeous) and he marries the girl and gets her horse in one move~ and they come back to Texas. ADD one troubled man outcast (James Dean at HIS best) who later strikes oil and moves the tale along to the RANCHER VS. OILMAN PLOT) We see Taylor, Hudson and Dean age from young to middle age in this movie and the make up and acting and plot is excellent with weaving a tale that never slows~ ADD Director George Stevens excellent shots of the barren Texas scenery~ outstanding writing~ we see how the Mexicans are treated as the "working" class.
