About this product

Product Information

"Written from the heart and without restraint, alive."-- The New York Times Vincent van Gogh, the great but tormented artist, bared his tortured yet ecstatic soul in his letters to his confidant and companion, his beloved brother Theo. These letters reveal the man behind such masterpieces as The Starry Night and The Bedroom --a desperate man whose quest for love became a flight into madness and for whom every day was a "fight for life." Irving Stone, acclaimed author of Lust for Life and other remarkable biographic novels, has collected Vincent van Gogh's fascinating letters to Theo. Here we see the great artist as a human being as well as a man with an appointment with destiny. Van Gogh is a man struggling with doubts and fears, beset by poverty and mental illness, but also a painter who dares to break all the rules of academic art to create priceless masterpieces never honored during his lifetime. He was part of the coterie of great artists of his day while as the same time an intimate of aging streetwalkers. These letters are outpourings of his soul that paint a vibrant self-portrait in words equal to the intensity and emotion his painting created. This is the personal story of a legend.

  • The Life and Times of Van Gogh thru hundreds letters to his brother Theo

A comprehensive insight into the mind of this fabulous painter via a collection of letters (hundreds of them) that Van Gogh sent to his brother Theo who historically has been credited with providing Vincent both financial and moral support. The book leaves you free to draw your own conclusions as to what part both the happy and unhappy aspects of this mans life played in generating the genius inherent in his work, but for me two things clearly stand out: (1) He was a masterful writer, (2) He was unfathomably sensitive to the beauty of nature and life in general. Its a very good read from both a human interest and historical standpoint as you will come to know first hand, his sadness, frustrations, and disappointments that factored into his early death.

  • Fascinating read

I recently finished reading "Lust For Life" and was amazed by Vincent's life. The book is based upon the letters written by Vincent to his brother Theo. I recommend reading "Lust for Life" before you read this collection of letters. It will make them much clearer and help you to understand the struggles he went through as a person and artist. An excellent and must read for all artists. He was a remarkable person and artist.
