This is used with an Apple Notebook Pro. I had purchased the small one USB powered claimed to be an Apple CD/DVD burner/player. Picky about which CD it recognizes. Compared to the LG, the LG runs away with performance. Works with all discs I have fed it, & I import a CD twice as fast. Very quiet operation. It's also twice as big. LG is not small but I can over look that. The Apple has the USB wire permanently attached, so if it brakes good luck buddy! The LG wire can be replaced. The LG also has a separate power wire so you need an outlet. There is an eject button on LG, but no controls at all on the Apple, so if a disc is stuck it's hell getting the disc out of Apple, just press the eject button on the LG.

Would have given it 5 stars if weren't for the fact that the Power/Eject button is located below the tray. It's obviously not an issue when first turning it on. The box powers up and the tray slides nicely out. After you insert the disc you then have to find a way to slip a finger/thumb underneath the tray to press the button once again to load the disc (some will say push the tray and it will load but I don't like to treat electronic equipment that way). I happen to have the drive located to the right of my computer and am right handed, so it's a bit of an issue that I've finally learned to deal with. If it were possible to have the drive on the other side of the computer it would be less of an issue since I could easily see the button. That being said, the drive performs well and meets my full expectations.Read full review

good DVD reader and writer, It's so easy to use, just plug it in an USB port and it's recognized like that. the writing speed is also fast. and it does not take up that much space. I haven't had any probles with it so far. I really recommend it.

fast attractive and quiet. now that macs don't come with optical drives its easy to see why. they made lousy drives. now of course they expect you to buy music from them hence the lack of optical drives. This lg drive is handsome and fits in with my smart tv and component blue ray player and hifi system. Installation was easy. I use it to copy prerecorded movies into mp4 files for my smart phone and mac computer and windows computer. It also enables me to put mp4 files on to flashdrives. Harddrives die all the time why not have a backup onto flashdrives too. We play movies from media imported into flashdrives and avoid even turning the computer on in the first place. Free flicks and dvds burned for older relative who don't have computers.

After starting a project to copy all my extensive DVD movie library, I discovered that after about 150 titles copied, my external dual-layer DVD writing drive was not giving me playable discs anymore. So, I had to go back through the whole mess, playing them on a DVD player to see if they would hang up somewhere, and sure enough, an increasing number over time were toast. So I got this very robust-looking LG drive and it is totally reliable, unlike the flimsy super-slim drives you usually see advertised (like the one that failed me). If you want to burn a large number of reliable DVD disc titles, this is the way to go, not those lightweight drives. Don't waste your time (and many disc blanks) on the latter.
