Archon was my absolute favorite game for the Commodore 64 computer, so I was hoping it would be ok for the NES as well. Quite simply, yes, it is great on the NES too! The graphics are simple, but while playing the game you don't even think about it. When your goblin is hitting the opposing players knight with his club it feels like you are dealing with real characters. Anyways, if you are reading this, you are probably aware of what the game is about. To me, Archon is a Must Have game.

My favorite game on the Commodore 64 as a kid. Wanted to try it on the NES 35 years later & it was just as fun as I remembered it being. Great strategic game for 2 players head to head with that fun duel to the death aspect every round. My kids want to play me constantly. So much fun!

Imagine chess...except on a 9x9 board, both sides have completely different pieces, and you actually get to fight over who takes a sqaure. This is Archon. In Archon, light battles dark to see who rules the next millenium. Each army starts with 18 pieces, and only one side will be left standing. Armies: Light: 7 Knights 2 Archers 2 Valkyries 2 Golems 2 Unicorns 1 Djinni 1 Phoenix 1 Wizard Dark: 7 Goblins 2 Manticores 2 Banshees 2 Trolls 2 Basilisks 1 Shapeshifter 1 Dragon 1 Sorceress As the game progresses, pieces attack each other, which begins a battle between the two pieces. However, unlike in chess, in Archon each player controls their piece and tries to defeat the other in order to claim the square. While the 7 "pawn" pieces have melee attacks, all other pieces have ranged attacks at varying strengths or speeds, depending on the piece. Each piece also has its own speed on the battlefield, and its own hp. In addition, if the fight takes place on a white square, the light side piece gains extra power and some bonus health. If the fight takes place on a black square, then the dark side piece gets the bonus. While some spaces stay black or white the whole game, most of the squares shift between Neutral-Part.Light-Light-Part.Light-Neutral-Part.Dark-Dark-Part.Dark-Neutral.... etc. So, the battle ebs and flows with the changing of the day! In addition, each side has one spell caster (Wizard or Sorceress). Each side gets six spells which they may cast as long as long as their spellcaster is alive. Each spell can be cast once per game, adding in "destroy enemy spellcaster" to your list of objectives. The spells are such like HEAL, or TELEPORT, or SUMMON ELEMENTAL (a spell which summons a free piece which makes one attack and then disappears). Spellcasters are immune to each others spells as long as they remain on a power square, and they each begin the game on one. There are three ways to win: 1) Eliminate all opposing pieces. 2) Occupy all 5 power squares 3) Imprison final piece (with imprison spell) Archon is one of my favorite games in the world. It's easy to look past it, since it is really old and the graphics are just as old...but it is still a wonderful game that I still play when I get a chance.Read full review
