Colony Wars in general is a great series of outer space games that are not even around anymore. It always had variety and excellent gameplay for a PS1 title. The second game in the series picks up the story with you and the Navy defending against the League's attacks to rule the Galaxy and Earth. The game is noted for it's missions and dogfights and this one gives you an array of both. The first game had it's mix of missions on League frigates and battle ships as well as escort missions, while this release added planet based missions as well. You'll defend against enemy scouts, disable a platform and destroy a space repair station that is currently in progress, all within the same mission. Next you'll destroy turrets on a planet and disable the shields of generators and plant probes for the navy to target and destroy and then build turrets in space with the use of a grapple, by dragging pieces of the turret together within the time limit to defend against a surge of ships while you repair and defend a stuck Navy Cruiser. Whew! There's at least 50 possible missions to do and along the way you can upgrade your ships attributes if you earn credits for successful missions. The game has beefed up the weapon arsenal and offers a ton of different cannons that strip armor, leech armor and destroy the targets. also are torpedo secondary weapons the aid you. The game is not easy, harder than the original but fun as heck. The graphics have stepped up and the galaxy is filled with better planet and supernova graphics, particle effects of ships splintering after they explode. The series also has great sound in Dolby Surround. The explosions were always cool in this series, the way the huge frigates would light up white during it's implosion, the crackle as the ship would start to erupt and the final "BOOM" as the ships disintegrate. After trading it in years ago, I found it again to add to the original Colony Wars I always kept.Read full review
I recently became obsessed with finding quality classic PS games that I may have missed when I was younger. Many titles all my friends had and I may have even played them back in the day, but just never owned or got around to. This game however, I'd never even heard of before about a week ago. Criminal, that. The reason is, space dogfight shooters are fairly rare and hard to come by. Name three right of the top of your head. I can think of only two such game franchises: Starfox and those X-wing vs Tie Fighter games. I've always been partial to Starfox despite the fact that most of the levels you're on rails and can't control your own acceleration. Well, COLONY WARS is like Starfox on steroids. Intuitive controls, constant dogfights, NEVER on rails, great variety of weapons, and some nice graphical touches for the time it was made. For instance, when you hit the gas the stars blur like you're going into hyperspeed or something. It sounds quaint, and by God it is, but I never popped it in thinking it was going to have mind-bending graphics. Really, I was just pleasantly surprised to see all the care that went into it. The bottom line is this, if you like games like Starfox, you will drool over this one. No cartoonish voice acting or animations, an actual plot with adults, much more fun and realistic play. Some of the later levels fill up the screen with enemy fighters of all shapes and sizes, insane. Also you can customize your ship as well as pick from different types in the hangar. There's just a level of sophistication here I always felt was lacking in the genre. As a sidenote, I am certainly not taking into account the time that has passed since the game's original release or the shortcomings of the PS. If what you want is retro, or you're like me and just want to catch up on a slice of gaming that was missed, then I recommend COLONY WARS: VENGEANCE. Also, there should be a movie with the Seismic Lance as a weapon.Read full review
Good solid game but from the reviews, I got the impression that this would be far more difficult and serious game, in tone. It’s not and I’m ok with that.
