What we armchair fighter jocks want is a game with enough complexity that every time we play it, it will challenge us. Not so simplistic that only a child would enjoy it, but not so laden with minutiae like oil pressure and Gs, that only a real fighter pilot could. With all this, and then some, plus graphics that will let you see sights of aerial combat you'd never dream you'd see, Ace Combat delivers! Namco gets it.

When trying to play Story Mode, the game tends to freeze. As a result, gameplay doesn't last very long.

I have Ace Combat 5 with the flight stick and throttle controls so I thought I would try this one. It does work with the controls though I have not been able to retrieve saved games using the controls. In very easy mode it is great for those of us that are NOT professional gamers. That makes this a bit easier than Ace Combat 5 which has some levels that are VERY hard to beat. It has a versus mode so you can play against a friend. The graphics and realism are very good I really like it. If only I could get it to retrieve saved games with the flight stick controls.
First off I rated this lowered then what I felt it deserves, but that because if you prefer realism over action-packed, this game may not be for you. However if you prefer action, this is a definite buy. Should you prefer realism, get Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War. This game seems like Ace Combat 2 with much better graphics, but compared to AC2, AC04 has less varied missions. Alot of the time, you'll just be destroying as much as possible. I imagine it'll bother some people, but I thought it was fun. Usually I just blow stuff up anyways. The game's soundtrack truly shines as the best in the series, especially the 'Megalith Angus Dei', which is a techno/symphony score set to the lyrics of W. Mozart's Requiem, Angus Dei movement. It sets the tone for the greatest firefight of the series. Check this one out.Read full review
The game is a really good game. The realism is pretty good and the graphics are really good as well for the year it was made. The storymode is well drawn out and very illustrative but it does take awhile to go through it if you watch the story unfold. The gameplay is pretty good and consistent. Sometimes some of the missions are a little too easy and then some of them are hard as crap. At the start it's easy to move through the storyline but as you go it gets more and more difficult, a good thing for a story-mode game. Some games just stay the same difficulty through-out the levels but this gets more difficult as you go. The only drawback I get is the lack of airplane choices you have for awhile. It's like you have to buy them which takes awhile to do. Great game and I recommend it to anybody that loves airplane fighter games.Read full review
