Does it sound biased, I wonder, if I start this review with "This is one of my favorite games from my childhood?" Probably not, it's a matter of opinion. But to say this is one hell of a good island-hopping platformer is a more generalized, more accurate, statement. I love this game. I bought it simply because I wanted to play it the way it was meant to be played. This game was a huge improvement over the original Adventure Island, which I've heard people compare to Super Mario Bros. in the past. Rather than running through eight worlds and battling the same boss at the end of each world (Okay... I think I see what the accusers are saying, kinda), you hop across eight islands, with your trusty stone axe at your side. But this time, you have the help of various cutesy dinosaurs. You have the Red Camptosaurus, which breathes fire that can destroy anything except for other fires and can walk on lava. Then there's the Blue Camptosaurus, which shoots some sort of spark from his tail which can also destroy anything except the random fires you come across. He can also walk normally on ice. There's the Elasmosaurus, which helps you swim faster and is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY in the game's final level. Finally, there's the Pteranodon, which drops rocks and flies to any height. As a kid, the Pteranodon was always my favorite, but now I tend to prefer the Blue Camptosaurus for his friction on ice. Once again you're playing as Master Higgins, out to save your lovely girlfriend, Tropical Tina. There are eight worlds once again, but unlike the first which recycled backgrounds and whatnot for various levels, there's a central theme for each island. The first is Fern Island, which is full of your standard plains levels. The second is Lake Island, which takes place primarily under the sea. The third, Desert Island, takes place in, you guessed it, deserts! The fourth is Ice Island, which introduces the ice levels, which alternate between mad fun and sheer annoyance. The fifth, Cave Island,, well... you can guess from here. The exception is the final island: Dinosaur Island, which is less themed and centered more in hair-pulling difficulty. These are some of the hardest levels I've ever played, that I can remember offhand anyway. It HAS been a long time since I've set foot on Dinosaur Island, granted... I honestly can't think of a single bad thing to say about the game. I would cite the scarce amounts of fruit in the last levels of the game (There being only one bottle of milk in the very final level), but honestly, I think it adds to the challenge. This game is mostly pattern memorization. I would say this stands up there as one of the best 8-bit platformers in history. It's definitely the best of the NES Adventure Island games.Read full review
This is another one of those games that has excellent replay value along with superior graphics and music. This is actually the best out of the other 2 NES games (Adventure Island 1 and 3, respectively). Much more items and improvement overall, such as non-linear level playing (depending on whether you complete a level or receive the option to skip it). Although I love the ENTIRE soundtrack in the game, my favorite one is from the blizzard level (the one with the deceptively cute bunnies and penguins). I don't like the ice levels though, you tend to fall into the pit a lot (unless you acquire the Blue Dinosaur). The bosses are progressively harder as you delve into the levels. My other favorite level (other than the blizzard one) is the volcano one. It's intense!! So pick up this game or you will truly miss out on a wonderful gem.Read full review
Not just hammers and skateboards this time! Now we have dinosaurs, boomerangs, and a chance to collect items upon items. This game is seriously a great one. A fantastic side scrolling adventure game. 8 different islands to conquer, 4 dinosaurs to ride on, and lots of bad guys looking to get beat. Being able to collect items and dinosaurs and keep them in storage makes this game above and beyond. Words don't do it justice. Go play this game. You'll thank me.
Game is easy and fun to play.
