This book was very helpful to me in my writing endeavors. Though one of the chapters (The Life and Business of Writing) is a bit out of date (this particular version of the book was published in 1990) the rest of the book has timeless advice on writing a science fiction or fantasy book. Orson Scott Card, the book's author, approaches his explainations mostly from a sci-fi standpoint but everything is still applicable to fantasy. He offers great advice, and I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to develop a sci-fi or fantasy story. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: ...The book is shorter than I imagined it (I bought it online and didn't know the size). Though I would have liked it to last longer, it's full of great information and a nice book to travel with. 140 pages. ...There are a few bad words in the book, so keep that in mind while you're reading or if you're going to give it to a younger person. There weren't enough to deter me from harvesting all the information in the book. ...Some of the topics he talks about in the book are the following: definition of science fiction and fantasy, how to create your world, dragging ideas through "the idea net", constructing a story, the MICE quotient (milieu, idea, character, event), exposition (which is wonderful), etc. Over all, i think this is a great book (though short) and I plan to keep it with me and use its information throughout my writing process. Not only for traditional story authors, but also a great find for comic/webcomic writers.Read full review
