The Granddaddy of all shark documentaries that started the subject craze and influenced the creation of 1975's JAWS. I saw this in 1971 when there was little information on sharks other than a few books and was a fantastic theater experience. Despite being 50 years old, the underwater film footage is still top notch giving a glimpse of primarily Oceanic White Tip sharks and Great Whites. The film shows the time, effort and frustration of undertaking the search of the then little film documented Great White sharks. But all these years later, the real treat of the movie is the footage of the Oceanic White Tip sharks. This shark is the cause of the most human deaths by shark over the centuries, largely from shipwrecks in open seas. Unfortunately, they are being driven to extinction by long line fishing techniques. It's a chance to see large numbers of them around a harpooned whale and aggressively probing the human divers. The film also has good extras including a reunion of the cast back in the '00s at a diver's convention, a real treat for a most deserving film.Read full review

It's documentaries like this one that have always made me want to be a marine biologist. Perhaps a young George Costanza watched "Blue Water, White Death" and his love for life in the sea was born on the spot. I guess we'll never know. It was Peter Matthiessen's book Blue Meridian that first drew my attention to this film. His gripping narrative about the expedition cemented my fascination, causing me to search for and purchase the documentary. The storyline centers on a group of divers, sailors, and filmmakers on a ship leaving the port of Durban, South Africa. They are following the whaling ships, hoping to find and film the sharks that routinely feed on the floating whale carcasses. Their plan is to drop shark cages next to the dead whales and film the sharks as they tear the whales to shreds. While they are successful in filming sharks feeding, their primary target, the great white shark, remains MIA. After having their fill of blues, duskies, and oceanic whitetips the crew heads for other locations, still intent on finding the great white. The suspense builds and builds until finally their quarry is found off the coast of Australia. The wait is well worth it, as the underwater footage of the white death is some of the best ever shot. This film is essential for shark enthusiasts as well as lovers of great documentaries.Read full review
