I'm sure it works fine as a machete or for chopping branches or small trees, but what the deciding factor was for me was the saw portion, and it was a big disappointment. The saw blade on my Swiss army knife works much better. If I'd known that, I'd have bought a different one, or I wouldn't have bought one at all.

The Ontario Machete maintains a great name. The blade is 10 inches and is carbon steel. It is a light 3 pounds.

This is an awesome tool for hacking. I have actually used it to cut small trees, fat lighter wood and have even split green oak tree logs that (did not exceed the length of the blade) Of course I had to use a stout heavy green oak limb to pound the tool through the log. How awesome is that? I would say it is an outstanding tool for both military and civilian use. There are no drawbacks that I can find. Would highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a nearly indestructable hatchet knife. The saw blade on the back does cut but don't expect a miracle. This tool was never meant to be "razor sharp" and it is not necessary to try and make it that way. I just use a whetstone when necessary (not often at all) The SP8 is a very necessary item to have in your arsenal of camping gear. +++ Mine is going on 30 years now and never failed me yet.Read full review

Though it only comes with a so-so factory edge blade (really hacks up what your cutting)it's decent as a splitter, and digger, for those jobs you wouldn't do with your most revered knives.I tried sharpening it,and just couldn't get a satisfactory edge.I lended it to a guy to sharpen, and never saw him or the knife again.NEVER LEND OUT YOUR KNIVES AND TOOLS!
