Written by Sandra Cisneros, The House on Mango Street is an excellent book for anyone who wants another reading materiel before their favorite book's next volume. The House on Mango Street is about a year in the life of a girl named Esperanza who is a Chicana or Mexican-American she is about twelve years old when the novel begins. During the story, she and her family moves into a house on Mango Street. The house is a big improvement from the family’s previous home, which is an apartment, and it is the first home her parents actually own. However, the house is not what Esperanza has dreamed of, due it is run-down and small state. The house is in the center of a crowded Latino neighborhood in Chicago, a city where many of the poor areas are racially segregated. Esperanza does not have any ... The House on Mango Street is one of those books you never forget reading. It is a sweet, sweet wisp of a book. The story is about Esperanza, a girl growing up in the United States in the very poor inner-city. Although some of Esperanza's difficulties are encountered only by those growing up Hispanic, almost all situations can be felt deeply by all who read it. The book is stunningly told with its quirky language and sentiment (in fact, some stories are semi-autobiographical for Cisneros). In addition, it is told in small vignettes, and Esperanza's age jumps around throughout the book. All can relate to the school situations as well as the heartbreaking family ones, and the trials and tribulations of being an awkward teenager is a major theme of the book. Who can't ... The House on Mango Street is one of those books you never forget reading. It is a sweet, sweet wisp of a book. Pretty good book. Enjoyable.
I bought this book for a school assignment and had to take extensive notes on it. To be hinest, I never would have read this book if I didn't have to, but it turned out to be a pretty good story. The book is a quick read and told from a 12 year old's POV (Point of View). I enjoyed this book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read. It has 110 pages, some words are misspelled, and the chapters are short (like about one full page), but again, it is told be a 12 year old.I bought this book for a school assignment and had to take extensive notes on it. Great book for hispanics learning English...
Sandra Cisneros really captures the essence of the inmigrant into the states. It's a compilation of short stories that once read, they stay with you forever. Written through a little girl's point of view, you can't help to feel connected with what she's narrating. Whether it brings back memories of your own experience or simply make you feel related, her stories are an uplifting way of looking at where you currently are compared to the first days of personal inmigration. I use this books with my adult students and they love it, they feel the learning experience. Definetely a keeper in your library collection.
