Ranges from OD to distortion, add real meat, & includes clean boost
The gain shifts from a fairly cleaned up overdrive to a dimed Marshall, which offers a lot of flexibility. The tone shaping is fairly useful as well. Personally, I have this pedal stacked immediately after a transparent overdrive (JHS modded Soul Food) and they make a wicked combination. The boost is very useful - alone, or stacked. It's not a "true" clean boost, but adds just the thinnest layer of dust on your signal. Killer distortion/boost pedal for the money.
In my never ending quest for tone, my recent road has led me to the ZVex Box of Rock. I had known about this pedal for a while, but finally felt the need to purchase and I am quite glad I did. The Vexter version is replacing my King of Tone on my pedal board. I mostly play Fender (single coil) guitars into a Fender Deluxe Reverb RI (with Weber speaker)....I love the clean bite however needed some good dirt akin to something British on occasion, this pedal does it well. As I rarely get to turn the DRRI past 3, I leave the SHO portion of the BoR on all the time. When I need Fender cleans, I have the Distortron side off, however a lot of times I will just roll down the volume on the guitar to clean it up. Pros: Simple to operate, pedal friendly, cleans up with guitar volume, small, plenty of volume (don't blow your amp!), excellent build quality and tone, affordable. Cons: Small (switches are close together), have to keep tone knob past 1 o'clock or too muddy.

Excellent tone and playability.
The BOR is an excellent distortion box, much more fluid and dynamic than some would think, since it's been characterized as a "Marshall In A Box". The Marshall that it seems to capture is that elusive, jangly tone of the JTM45. Due to its excellent voicing, it works well feeding the front end of an amp as well as feeding my digital rack processors (11R and GSP1101) for some nice texturizing. The only fault with my BOR are the scratchy pots. The circuitry itself works fine, but all the pots seem to be equally scratchy. I've read elsewhere that this is an issue with the BOR; for me, the tone is so nice that i don't care if i have to listen to some scratchy pots. What I like about the zvex box of rock, is that you get two pedals in one. The ovredeive side can go from clean boost to the cranked Marshall (as the pedal says) the boost is very clean, and you allmost get more boost then you need. I have it at 1 o clock and that's still a 20db gain. The only thing I don't like about this pedal (and I don't think it applies to all with mine being a clone) it has 3ptd switches but its not wired for true bypass, my vexter box of rock is but doesn't sound as good. all in all this is must have in my opinion.What I like about the zvex box of rock, is that you get two pedals in one. Pushing the distortion circuit higher reveals the pedals distortron capabilities, a presense rich growl complete with lows, mids, and highs. The Volume control works with the Gain circuit to help you dial in your desired tone, and you can dial in slight dirt, a crunchy rhythm, or a fully saturated sounding lead tone. The Boost side of the pedal does exactly that - makes the first stage of the pedal louder. Keep in mind that this side of the pedal works independently of the distortron side - you can decide to use the Boost side to slam your amp into overdrive without ever touching the distortron ...
