I was disappointed in this CD. If you are a fan of the Banjo "pinging" sound & playing style of Doug Dillard, and the Mandolin played between the two brothers in their music styles...in combination of all the Dillard Boys singing their famous harmonies.... Then you will be disappointed int his CD. Its not there. This is still a nice CD though. If you love the guitar....there is plenty. And you really won't hear all of the brothers singing together on this CD. I just love it when they bring all the instruments together in that Hillbilly Mountain Style of Bluegrass style they play and harmonize together. I think its what makes them THE DILLARDS! Purchase (THE DILLARDS - PICKIN' & FIDDLIN' BACK PORCH BLUEGRASS) It is one EXCELLENT CD! Well, thats my review! It all depends on your taste & style of Music...It wasn't to my liking, but it also wasn't bad music either. I give it an average ranking only because I wanted to hear the banjo & mandolin pinging sounds....and its not there on this CD.Read full review
Although the cover artwork for this CD looks convincing, showing the Dillards in character from an old shot as "The Darlings" from "The Andy Griffith Show", the actual music on this compilation is not as convincing. The Dillards do the fine job they always do, although this particular collection has too much of a "modern" sound for my taste. I was expecting to hear what the artwork depicted: The happy Bluegrass sounds of "The Darlings" just as we heard them on "The Andy Griffith Show" years ago. To my dismay, the banjo is not prevalent and there are too many ballads. This is not the Dillards "as" The Darlings" as I had hoped for, it is The Dillards presented in a contemporary sound as... The Dillards.
When I pushed the play button, I hoped I would "Jump in and hang on tight!", as Briscoe Darling told Andy Taylor. While this is an enjoyable bluegrass album by an accomplished group, it doesn't sound like the frenetic music I think I remember from the deadpan Darlin's on their "Andy Griffith Show" episodes, which was what I hoped I would get. If you are a fan of the Dillards, you will like it, but it's not really The Darlin' Boys.
I thought I'd hear songs played on the Andy Griffith sho, but the music on there is pretty good anyway.
