The MXL R144 Ribbon Wired Professional Microphone allows you to work on transcriptions or record music, stage performances and other audio, The stock MXL R144 Ribbon microphone uses an aluminum ribbon transducer and transformer, which by nature is a bidirectional pickup pattern. This microphone incorporates a unique figure-eight polar pattern that makes it an efficient catcher of room sound and instruments. With its transformer sensitivity at -56 dB, it picks up even the slightest sounds in any room, meaning you need to isolate yourself while recording. This microphone has a High SPL capability, so it is perfect for musicians using electric guitars and horns in their music, as it polishes those notes to perfection. The MXL R144 ribbon wired professional microphone provides mellow sound with a rich midrange and rolled-off top end. The 1.8-micron aluminum ribbon in this microphone produces crisp and vivid sound. Featuring ribbon length of 47mm, this microphone delivers high performance with compact components. The MXL R144 model microphone offers a frequency range of 20Hz to 17kHz. This microphone unit from MXL sports an impedance of 250 Ohms and a rated load impedance greater than 1500 Ohms. This mic unit, like all other ribbon mics, can handle phantom power and does not require a traditional 48-volt phantom power source, as it is built-in. The MXL R144 professional microphone is compact, measuring in with size specifications of a width of 47mm and a height of 171mm. This unit is also lightweight, weighing in at only 400g, making it an ideal choice to use on a stand or alone in your hand. The compact design makes mic placement easy and quick for all users. The front of the microphone is indicated by the MXL logo where the audio signal is ’in-phase’ while the back side has an inverted phase. The metal finish comes in a stylish design with a purple base and chrome mouthpiece. Accessories included with the MXL R144 ribbon wired professional microphone include a black shock mount and an MXL microfiber cleaning cloth. Optional accessories include a pop filter, black metal mesh pop filter, and additional shock mounts. Ribbon mics typically have a lower output than condenser microphones and may require a preamplifier with a lot of gain. It is highly recommended to use a preamp with low noise, high gain, and an input impedance of 1500 ohms or greater. Incorporating a Figure-8 polar pattern and a 1.8-micron aluminum ribbon, the MXL R144 offers breathtaking sound for vocal and instrument recordings and is an excellent microphone for broadcast video applications. The R144 also performs brilliantly on acoustic instruments, strings, and horns and offers high SPL capability, outstanding side rejection and precise directivity.     Great entry level microphone

    It records very well. It's upgraded my recording software from my Zoom H4 and Zoom Q2N. If you're planning on recording to your computer, get an audio interface, I went with the Behringer U-phoria UM2. It's a great pairing, and the Behringer came with great software to use. You won't be disappointed !

    Great buy. It's enough to produce a quality sound & it gets the job done

    When shopping for a microphone for a recording studio, one must fully understand what they are looking for. Simply because quality is everything & you always get what you pay for. The higher the amount you spend, the better the sound quality & the less you spend, the poorer the quality. When it comes to the MXL R144 Ribbon microphone, it's a pretty decent component. Although, I paid $99 for it, it doesn't means that it's a bad microphone because when they first hit the market they were at least $150+. When I first got this mic, I was very impressed with it's sound quality. The vocals are clean & crisp with a slight reverb effect (I'm not sure if it's the way that I have my sends & receives routed is the cause, but it sounds great).     Smooth sound

    I bought this mic many moons ago. It is a little shy at the top end which gives it that 'smooth' sound, however, a little high frequency lift on the console and it balances well. Overall, a good mic. JMM

    Very solid mic that contends with ribbon mics costing 30x more! no joke!

    I have one of these already and they are remarkable. I have a high-end RCA ribbon mic collection and plan to send the MXL's to have the 44bx mod done to them by Stephen Sank. He can install a thinner rca ribbon (new old stock) and put in a Cinemag transformer and they will really sound amazing. I will be able to compare an originall 44bx with a modded MXL r144 (pair) and stock r144. Pretty excited about the MXL. The stock one I gave my buddy sounds very vintagy and full of rich harmonic character and actually seems calibrated pretty well out of the box. The transformer is silent and the mic is well built. A newer transformer and thinner ribbon will give it more sensitivity and wider frequency response, but only by a slight amt. Officially, they pretty much sound as good as any ...

    The best you can get for the price.

    This is a great sounding mic and the lowest price for a ribbon mic. I have another MXL mic that I use for vocals, but I wanted to try out a ribbon mic. Since my other MXL mic sounds so good I thought I would try this one. To begin with just to check it out, I recorded a bit of my talking. It sounded very natural. There was virtually no noise to be removed. It was better than with other mics I have used. In addition, buying from this seller, you get a mic stand and an excellent quality cable.
