I bought this book because it was referred to me from a friend. It was much more interesting than I thought and relatable at some points. Made me feel like if times get rough, they are not near as rough as this girl had it. I enjoyed the reading and it helped me through hard times. Plus, it was good to read when I couldn't go back to sleep in the middle of the night. It's not that it made me tired, but it was interesting and calming. This poor girl went through so much, makes me feel sorry for her and thankful that my life is not that way. The buying experience was fine, except at the end of my purchase, there was some sort of security alert that would not go away unless I accepted it and paid. The site was not a secure site either so I was a little uncomfortable with that. I didn't have to buy it if I didn't want to. I almost backed out because of this weird security issue.Read full review
This is one of my all time favorite books, I had a copy once before but lost it moving and just HAD to replace it. Anyone who has suffered from severe depression, bi polar, borderline personality disorder or a multitude of mental illnesses can really relate to this book. It is a true look into the mind, thoughts and feelings of a young woman who is depressed among other things. It is a true story about Elizabeth Wurtzel's life and struggles to try and over come these things. The movie was alright but the book goes into so much more detail and gives more insight into the psyche of someone who feels like they're crazy. She talks about the things she thinks about, the things she does and the reasoning or lack there of for doing them. I think this is a book that even people who have not suffered from clinical depression or other mental illness should read, especially if they have a friend or relative that has suffered from mental illness because it could really give a better perspective on how someone with these problems feels and what goes through their mind. I think it could be very helpful to read if you are living with someone with a similar mental illness. People with mental illness, speaking from my own personal experiences, sometimes feel that no one could possibly understand how they feel and sometimes feel as though they are just crazy and this book can truly give someone to relate to. When reading this book I had been struggling with mental illness for only a few years, diagnosed anyhow, and I almost felt as if I knew Elizabeth Wurtzel and she was just like me. Again, I strongly suggest that people struggling with mental illness and those living with someone with mental illness read this book because it gives you a true honest perspective and look into the mind of someone suffering from these problems. I suggest even people that have not had experience with mental illness read this book to better understand why some people are the way they are and educate those that may be ignorant to this subject. In this book Elizabeth also shares her experience with drug therapy and hospital treatments. She shares information on one of the drugs that was the foundation for psychological medications, prozac, hence the title of the book and she talks about how the development of psychiatric drugs has evolved. For the time period this book was written, it was ahead of its time and as the need for psychiatric treatment has grown, I think this book is a great resource for everyone. This book is very well written, very easy to read and understand and a very in depth look into the mind of mental illness from a real person who truly struggled with what so many people struggle with everyday but had the courage to write about her trials and tribulations. I very much admire Elizabeth Wurtzel for her work in this book and the struggles she had to overcome. She is great representative for those who struggle with mental illness but can not express their feeling and struggles themselves.Read full review

I really loved this book. From the minute I started reading I did not want to put it down. I am in a "mental health" reading club and have read many books about depression. This was extremely well done and I'm so glad to have read it.
Wow! Eliabeth really struggled! It was awesome to see what a difference prozac made for her just when she was about ready to give up. A good read. Hope to see the movie soon.
