The Breakfast Came out in 1985. As a specimen of '80s pop-culture, this is as good as it gets. The soundtrack to this movie could not be more '80s, with songs that rely heavily on keyboards and synthesizers. The most notable song, of course, is Simple Minds Don't You Forget About Me. Other songs such as "Heart Too Hot to Hold" do a fantastic job of capturing the hormone-riddled atmosphere that pervades high school. Also, the movie does a fantastic job of capturing '80s decor--in the school. As a movie, this is a 5/5. It combines comedy, with plenty of soundbites, with drama. The movie is about five teenagers from very different backgrounds who are forced to spend a day together in detention. It stars Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, Paul Gleason and John Kapelos. Each of the five kids in detention is a brain, an athlete, a basketcase, a princess and a criminal. Normally, they would never cross paths, but in detention, they learn that they have far more in common than they ever could imagine--feelings of inadequacy, insecurity, trouble at home. There is a serious side to this movie as all five teens bare their souls to one another and end up helping each other take a real hard look at themselves. My favorite characters are the detention teacher (Paul Gleason), who does such a great job of being mean and nasty that he's fun to watch. He's also dumb and viewers will get a laugh out of watching the kids make a fool out of him. John Kapelos plays the janitor and he's something of a smart-aleck. He's also sharper than you would expect a janitor to be. For example, when asked how one becomes a janitor, Kapelos replies "You think I'm some untouchable peasant, surf, peon? Maybe so, but I listen to your conversations, I read your notes, I go through your lockers. I am the eyes and ears of this institution." Another funny exchange is between the janitor and the detention teacher. The detention teacher says "When you get old, when I get old, these kids are gonna be running the country. This is the thought that keeps me awake at night, that when I get old, these kids are going to take care of me." "I wouldn't count on it," replied the janitor. The Breakfast Club is a must-see for every school-teacher and principal and anyone else who works in the Education profession. It is a comedy that depicts school life in a way that few other movies depict. It gives a snapshot of being in detention; very few movies have the theme of kids in detention. It also sheds light on school from students' perspective in a way that few other movies do and the mistakes to avoid as a teacher--mainly being a jerk and labeling students. If you want a snapshot of life in the '80s, the Breakfast Club hits the jackpot.Read full review
This Film is a classic about a group of high schoolers on detention with all the stereotypical roles being casted, the jock, the queen, the outcast, the geek, the stoner!! Though a day on detention anywhere else would never be like the one Hollywood has portrayed it certainly is an enjoyable soul-searching coming of age film. To call it a comedy alone would be an injustice as it has many of the elements as found in dramas. A keeper for sure but perhaps better in the DVD format!
VHS movies seem to be headed the way of the beta max movies. Finding certain ones in good shape can be trying. i have found on e bay that is not so. The Breakfast Club looks at a small group of teen agers that are not a click and not friends. They have nothing in common ... or so they thing. After a day in a room together they see theirselves through the eyes of various types, a jock, a princess, a brain, a criminal, and a basket case. What they see is that we are a bit of all things in life. It is funny and yet serious, Eye opening yet hopeful. A must own movie because you can't ever see it to many times.
I really like this movie because it show different personalitys of our younger generations trying to survie life in High school. I saw this movie when it first came out & my 14 year old saw it one day on TV & she like it alot. She asked me to buy it for her, so I did. Cause I know she relates to it. I know this is a movie that our younger generation would really enjoy. I wish they still made movies like this still. Not like the ones now, with sex & drugs. We need clean movies for our kids. This is one I approve of. There is nothing I don't like about this movie, I can see it over and over again. I love Molly Ringwall she is a wonderful actress. I pretty much love all her movies.
Necessary background for Pitch Perfect movies: Interesting movie about problems of teens in 1985. The teens with problems that landed them in detention help each other improve their mental health. More serious problems are there for teens in 2000’s Pitch Perfect movies. Helpful info for parents.
