Seller Notes: “This very old BLACKSMITH cross peen hammer head has me STUMPED? It's hard to read, but I believe ... “This very old BLACKSMITH cross peen hammer head has me STUMPED? It's hard to read, but I believe that the words on the side of the hammer head are: "JOHNSON" and "WARRANTED" (see pics). In my experience of collecting and selling old tools now for over 10 years, when I see the word WARRANTED stamped on an axe or some other tool, it most likely was made in the 1800s (1870s to 1890s typically). So I would guess this old hammer head was made in the late 1800s or so. (JOHNSON could have been the maker of this old hammer head, or the previous owners name??) The 2" octagonal hammer face is missing some pieces of steel around the edges (see pics). There's also some slight mushrooming of the hammer face too (see pics). The 1-1/2" cross peen actually looks really well for such an old hammer head (see pics). There's scratches, scrapes and ding marks on all sides of this old hammer head, which is very normal for such an old hammer, like this hammer head is (see pics). The wight is 3 lb 14.6 oz.”
