    Fred Hersch and other good jazz artists play French classics and do it well

    I am a big fan of Fred Hersch's jazz piano playing, which I find sober, complex and spare (not much running around the keyboard). Other artists of the jazz persuasion have tried adapting classical music, with mixed success. I have not found anyone who has done a good job with Chopin improvisation, though I like the work of the musicians who have tried. I have heard Jacques Loussier's try at Vivaldi and find it pretty good. I think Hersch's try here is a bit better in part because Hersch's approach to jazz -- often on the quiet, melodic side -- seems to fit more with French impressionistic music. So while classical and jazz purists may cringe at the album, it is pleasant, reasonably inventive, and relaxing to listen to. If any jazz musicians happen across this, why doesn't someone try ...
