About this product

Product Information

The first Monster Rancher was a cult hit among players of all ages. Monster Rancher 2, released two years later, retains the basic premise of the original while adding several new features and more advanced graphics. Like its predecessor, Monster Rancher 2 is a game of breeding, training, and fighting. A monster is "born" by inserting a CD (audio, CD-ROM, or even another PlayStation game) into the console at the requested time. The game reads a portion of data from the CD and creates a unique monster. 408 different monsters are possible, as compared to 193 in the original.

Monsters from the original game can also be imported. Once a monster is ready to go, it is up to you to train it properly. Over the course of a monster's life, it will behave much like a real animal -- growing, getting hungry, becoming tired, disobeying you, etc. Sadly, your monster will even eventually die. Six characteristics determine the strength and quality of your monster: Life (Lif), Power (Pow), Defense (Def), Skill (Ski), Speed (Spd), and Intelligence (Int). These are improved by putting your monster through a series of drills and errantries.

Drills are free and take one week of time while errantries cost money and take one month. The advantage of errantries is that your monster can learn new battle techniques and gain experience more quickly. In addition to training, you must also periodically give your monster time to rest. Money, fame, and status are earned through battles, which are held periodically throughout the year. There are six ranks of battles (E, D, C, B, A, S, from lowest to highest), and once you win the official tournament of a specific level, you move up to the next highest rank. The primary goal is to reach the status of "master trainer," achieved by winning the four major tournaments at the S rank.

Monster Rancher 2's new features include faster and less frequent load times, more than twice as many monsters, new training options, additional battle types, and entirely 3D graphics.

The absolute best monster raising game from its generatio

No other game, none of the vaunted Pokémon and Digimon games, at least from those years, comes even close to the depth and complexity of MR2. The game features incredible mechanics, with stress and fatigue driving your monster's growth and development. Achieving a balanced raising style is the most difficult part of the game! There's also an intricate battle system. While apparently basic, it actually features many different types of moves, with diverse effects, that need to be well understood to succeed. MR2 is definitely the best game of the whole series, and maybe of the entire genre.

  • Easy to pick up, hard to put down

I've been playing this game to pass the time until the release of another game, and it's been really fun. You can most if not all the disks in your household to create a monster for you to raise, (And you can even use this game's disc itself to get a pretty solid monster) and it doesn't take long for your monster to become a powerful and reliable fighter, given that you raise it well. And with so many types and variants of monsters and ways to raise them, it'll be a long time until you run out of things to do. A great purchase for retro game fans and virtual monster fans alike.

  • The BEST monster raising game EVER!

Monster Rancher 2 is the sweet spot when it comes creature raising games. There are 38 main types of monsters you can raise as well as numerous sub-breeds. In all you can raise 391 different types of monsters (there are 408 in the game if you count opponents). You might think that all the sub-breeds are identical to the pure other than appearance, but that isn't true. The lifespan, stat gains, and even some techniques are different. Monster Rancher isn't some level grind forever creature raising game, your monster actually has a life span and you need to make the most of raising you monster by having it perform drills to boost stats, sending it on errantries where it can learn new techniques, sending it on expeditions where it can find unique items, and fighting in tournaments to win ...

  • Nice game for a PS1

I had this game 18 years ago and fell in love with it. I am older so I feel this game is by far easier for someone like myself. Better art and playing than the first two (Monster Rancher and Monster Rancher Card). Easy saves, CD's help and I was hold it can be played on most P.S. models. Mine is a PS1.

  • Timeless game, never gets old

Compared to the first monster rancher this game is quite an upgrade. The monster raising mechanics are more complex making it harder, there are more monsters than ever before and tons of secret monsters even compared to the first one. Monster Rancher 2 might be the best game in the monster rancher series.
