Awesome little NAS cpu
I bought this old AMD processor because it is a 35-watt cpu that works in most all socket AM2 motherboards. I built a very low power, always-on home network server that works superbly and economically. It does nothing but serve files, and acts as a router and access point for my home network. One very small box with no monitor, no keyboard, a 3tb hard drive that functions in place of many pieces of equipment. It sits high on a shelf out of the way and I remote into it on my 300mb/s wireless network. No wires, no cables, no mess - nada. And it is silent. No fans and one Orucchi fanless cpu cooler that vents through the hole I cut in the top. My PSU is also a totally silent Antec Phantom. The WD green drive is also virtually silent and totally fast enough for evrything thrown at it. At idle ... I bought this old AMD processor because it is a 35-watt cpu that works in most all socket AM2 motherboards. I am in love with this little creation that never sleeps, never speaks, requires no maintenance, does every computer chore in the house and does not irritate the wife. Again, this antique 35-watt processor was made for this job. I would recommend this little 64-bit processor to anyone with similar interests as I have here. The fastest quad-core in its place would make no noticeable difference in the daily work accomplished. I know, because I started this project with a 95-watt Phenom. It made nothing "go" any faster at all. Multi cores are simply a waste when a single core is loafing while performing every task it must perform. Best $14.95 I ever spent.
